It looks like I'll be starting work at Google shortly. This is an exciting change, and I'm really looking forward to it. (Totally rearranging our household schedule, not so much.)

I'll be in SRE, doing some mysterious combination of software and system administration.

Congrats! If you end up in Bldg. 40, where I think most SREs are, I may ask for you to occasionally badge me in so I can attend an Authors@Google talk (which I have rights to do until the end of time : -)).

Sounds fun. I'll have to learn what the exact rules are first, of course.

Cool! For how long do you expect it to remain mysterious?
jon_leonardjon_leonard on January 21st, 2012 03:57 am (UTC)
There were a few questions (stuff like how large is the data store) that I asked during the interview where the answer was (more or less) "I don't know, and if I did, I wouldn't tell you." Google is fairly secretive about (some parts of) their infrastructure. Presumably I'll be working with some of that, so it'll get less mysterious to me. But it's reasonable to expect a certain amount of mystery to persist indefinitely.

Congratulations! I guess you qualified as "not evil"?
jon_leonardjon_leonard on January 21st, 2012 03:58 am (UTC)
Indeed. It would appear that I do not have the "be evil" bit set.

Congrats! I've heard that Google is a good company to work for!
